Our objectives are divided into the Four Avenues of Service:<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n Club Service<\/u><\/p>\n\n- Membership\n
\n- Increase membership in raw numbers by between 5 and 10 per cent<\/li>\n
- Intentional program of retaining new members by tasking proposers to be
\ndirectly and continuously engaged with new member<\/li>\n - Intentional outreach to lapsed members initiated by club president<\/li>\n
- Conscious recruitment to increase diversity of club membership in all respects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
\n- Explore structure and frequency of meetings\n
\n- Study potential to reduce number of meetings to two formal meetings
\nand one social gathering per month as initiative to increase
\nparticipation and membership (study July 1 to December 31;
\nno implementation, if at all, until 2019)<\/li>\n - Create a less formal (and less expensive) atmosphere for social gathering
\none time per month as an official meeting (no program, but
\nannouncements and focus on service projects)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n - Continue tradition of outstanding programs\u2014invite leaders of interest who
\naddress topics on a broad range of interests1<\/u><\/sup><\/li>\n\n- Affirm and strengthen relationship with Interact Club\n
\n- Concentrate on hospitality and inclusion for Interact members visiting our club<\/li>\n
- Initiate lead cash gifts at the beginning and end of school year to support
\nprogramming and service projects<\/li>\n - Fund a Paul Harris Fellow selected by the Interact Club from among the
\nTerre Haute North faculty to be awarded at annual joint meeting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n - Do all that we can to make Rotary fun<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Community Service<\/u><\/p>\n\n- Increase public profile\n
\n- \u201cTo be known by what we do\u201d\u2014focus energy on Rotary as a conduit for service
\nand not merely as a networking or luncheon social experience<\/li>\n - Continue excellent progress on social media, especially Facebook<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
- Initiate conversation about focusing resources on fewer charitable entities but
\nmaking larger impact<\/p>\n\n- Should Rotary adopt a three-year commitment to be a resource to local
\npublic schools in vocational and human support aimed at increasing
\nretention and community engagement with students?<\/li>\n - Should Rotary identify and concentrate on key needs rather than supporting
\none-off purchases and projects?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n - Identify at least one joint project with Interact that would require substantial member participation<\/li>\n
- Engage with Terre Haute Young Leaders with a proposed joint service project and
\nperhaps a joint meeting<\/p>\n\n- Make a conscious effort to reach out to and meet a new generation who are
\ninterested in community service if not necessarily (yet) looking for a
\nservice club as an avenue for that service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nVocational Service<\/u><\/p>\n\n- Encourage Rotarians to host social gatherings at businesses or place of employment\n
\n- If a more social-oriented meeting is adopted in 2019, could move these gatherings
\nfrom place to place and encourage Rotarians to share more about their
\nvocations and businesses on site<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n - Building programs around vocations\u2014make conscious choices in program selection to include diverse vocations and backgrounds<\/li>\n
- Explore partnerships with Ivy Tech Community College, the Vigo County School Corporation or other educational institutions to offer Rotarians as resources for career days or job fairs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
International Service<\/u><\/p>\n\n- Continue emphasis on RI Foundation giving\n
\n- Five new Paul Harris Fellows<\/li>\n
- Use accumulated points creatively to tell Rotary story, honor non-Rotarians,
\nraise public profile<\/li>\n - Regular program to encourage members to make at least a minimum gift to
\nparticipate in RI\u2019s work (the heart of Rotary)\u2014significantly increase percentage
\nof Rotarians who donate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n - Explore significant fund-raising event along the lines of \u201cHoosiers\u201d event\n
\n- Builds esprit de corps<\/em> and engagement among members<\/li>\n
- Raises community profile<\/li>\n
- Raises funds to be divided between RI Foundation and local club foundation
\nto support initiatives for community service<\/li>\n - Work hard; have fun; enjoy the satisfaction of putting together a successful event<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nConclusion<\/u><\/center>
\n Rotary here (and in most places) does not enjoy the membership numbers we saw 20 years ago and a new generation does not necessarily seek out networking opportunities of this kind. All of us, including Rotary International, need to ponder the reasons why younger people aren\u2019t necessarily buying what Rotary sells. An old Broadway producer observation is worthy of remembering: \u201cThere is no limit to the number of people who will stay away from a bad show.\u201d Rotary is not<\/u> a bad show, but it needs to reform and adapt in ways that attract an audience. We can be part of that.<\/p>\n An old sermon illustration first offered by the great 20th<\/sup> century preacher Harry Emerson Fosdick that comes to mind:<\/p>\nIt seems that the residents of a small town were awakened one night by sirens and fire alarms only to learn that one of the local churches had caught fire. As was the custom in small towns in those days, everyone put on clothes and headed to the scene in concern and curiosity as the firefighters fulfilled their urgent tasks. A long time church member, whose devotion was well known and attendance quite faithful, was watching heartbroken when he encountered another resident and church member on the scene among the onlookers. The longtime member couldn\u2019t help himself and sniffed at his fellow churchman, \u201cWell, first time you\u2019ve been at church in awhile.\u201d The lapsed member never missed a beat: \u201cFirst time the church has been on fire.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n The objective in the new year is to get Rotary \u201con fire\u201d with some concentration on mission, membership, and innovation\u2014and somehow convince the bystanders and those who have not yet engaged that it\u2019s worth the trip to come to the scene of the fire.
